Why Medical Records Matter in a Tennessee Personal Injury Claim
Medical records serve as the backbone of nearly every personal injury claim in Tennessee, since they provide the documented link between an incident and the injuries a person is seeking compensation for.
Without a clear paper trail that shows when treatment began, what was diagnosed, and how it progressed, an insurance company has room to argue that an injury was minor, unrelated, or pre-existing. This is why prompt medical evaluation after any injury matters so much, even one that initially seems minor.
Tennessee law generally allows an injured person up to one year from the date of an incident to file a personal injury lawsuit, and medical records created early in that window carry significant weight. A gap between when an injury occurred and when a person first sought treatment can give an insurer an opening to argue that something else caused the injury, or that it wasn’t as serious as claimed.
Beyond proving that an injury exists, medical records also help quantify its impact. Bills, treatment notes, and physician assessments are commonly used to calculate both past and future medical expenses. In cases that involve lasting impairment, records that document a prognosis can support claims for long-term or permanent damages under Tennessee law.
Medical providers aren’t always quick to release complete records and insurers tend to request specific documentation on their own timeline. To avoid facing these common struggles alone, many people turn to a Murfreesboro personal injury lawyer to help them gather and organize this evidence into a coherent record that supports the full value of a claim.
