Wilson Co., TN – One Dead, One Injured After Crash on I-840

Wilson County, TN (December 8, 2025) – The Tennessee Highway Patrol has recently shared further details on a serious collision that took place on Tuesday, December 2. The crash left one man dead and another person injured, shutting down a portion of Interstate 840 in Wilson County for several hours.

According to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, officials first alerted drivers around 1:19 p.m. that the eastbound lanes of I-840 near the 73.4-mile marker were closed indefinitely due to a crash. By 3:50 p.m., authorities confirmed the lanes had reopened, though heavy traffic delays continued through the afternoon.

Days later, on Friday, December 5, the Tennessee Highway Patrol released additional details. Investigators reported that John Spickler, 77, was driving a 2013 Nissan Frontier when he crashed into the rear of a 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer that had slowed because of traffic. Spickler suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.

The 43-year-old driver of the Volvo tractor-trailer was also injured, though the severity of those injuries has not yet been disclosed. Both vehicles involved sustained damage, and the collision resulted in responders shutting down the interstate for hours.

Authorities have not released further information as the investigation continues.

We send our condolences to the deceased’s family members and hope the injured victim makes a full recovery.

Common Injuries in Vehicle Crashes in Wilson County

Vehicle crashes in Wilson County often lead to a wide range of injuries, affecting drivers, passengers, and even bystanders. The severity of these injuries can vary depending on speed, impact angle, seat belt use, and overall crash dynamics. However, several types of injuries appear repeatedly in collisions reported by local agencies.

One of the most common injuries is whiplash, a soft-tissue injury caused by the rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck during impact. Even in moderate-speed crashes, victims may experience neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and reduced mobility that can last for weeks. Back injuries are also frequent, especially herniated discs or muscle strains, which can lead to chronic pain and limitations in daily activities.

Another significant category is head injuries, ranging from mild concussions to more serious traumatic brain injuries. These occur when a victim’s head strikes a window, steering wheel, or seat, or from violent shaking during the collision. Symptoms may include dizziness, memory issues, nausea, or loss of consciousness. In more severe cases, long-term rehabilitation may be required.

Chest injuries are also common, especially in crashes involving sudden deceleration. Seat belts help prevent more catastrophic harm, but they can still cause bruising or fractures to the ribs or sternum. Airbags protect occupants but can also contribute to abrasions, burns, and impact-related injuries. In high-impact collisions, organ damage or internal bleeding becomes a serious concern.

Limb injuries, including broken arms, wrists, legs, or ankles, frequently occur due to bracing during impact or being struck by vehicle components. These fractures can require surgery, physical therapy, and extended recovery periods. Cuts and lacerations from shattered glass or debris, while often less severe, can lead to scarring or infection if not treated promptly.

Finally, many crash victims suffer emotional and psychological injuries, including anxiety, driving fear, or post-traumatic stress. These injuries are less visible but can significantly affect a person’s quality of life.

In Wilson County, even a single crash can lead to multiple injuries across all occupants. Understanding the common types of harm emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical evaluation and documenting all symptoms after an accident.
