Rutherford Co., TN – Two Seriously Injured After Sedan Crashes Into Sheriff’s SUV on I-24

Rutherford Co., TN (March 10, 2026) –Two people suffered serious injuries early Monday morning, March 9, at approximately 1:00 a.m., after a crash involving a sheriff’s patrol vehicle and a fire truck on Interstate 24 between the Interstate 840 and Almaville Road exits near Murfreesboro.

Authorities said emergency vehicles were parked along the interstate while crews responded to an earlier crash involving an overturned semi-truck. Investigators report that a white sedan carrying two men struck the rear of a patrol SUV operated by Deputy Tyler Purvis. The patrol vehicle had been positioned in Lane 3 to block traffic and protect the initial crash scene.

The impact pushed the patrol SUV forward into a fire engine that had been stationed directly in front of it as part of the emergency response. Both the sedan driver and passenger sustained serious injuries in the collision. Paramedics from Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services transported the two injured occupants to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Officials stated that emergency responders at the scene were evaluated as a precaution but did not suffer injuries.

Authorities reported that the patrol SUV was totaled as a result of the crash, and the fire engine, identified as Rescue Engine 60 from Rutherford County Fire Rescue, sustained significant damage.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. We hope those injured in this crash recover quickly.

When a serious vehicle accident occurs in Rutherford County, investigators and attorneys often rely on several types of evidence to understand what happened and determine liability. Gathering and preserving this information early can be important if a legal claim is later pursued.

Some of the most common forms of evidence include:

  • Police crash reports: Official reports prepared by responding officers typically include diagrams of the scene, statements from drivers and witnesses, and preliminary observations about how the collision may have occurred.

  • Witness statements: Testimony from individuals who saw the crash or events leading up to it can provide additional perspectives on how the collision unfolded.
  • Vehicle data and accident reconstruction: Experts may analyze vehicle damage, onboard data recorders, and physical roadway evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.
